More Evidence BP Disaster Deliberate
The BP oil spill disaster appears to have been deliberately caused and not merely a case of greed and corruption.
Despite mostly successful efforts to block a real investigation into the explosion and sinking of the BP drilling rig Deepwater Horizon, the little investigation actually conducted has exposed gross mismanagement that smells strongly of a conspiracy.
- The emergency alarm on the rig was defective and switched off.
- The system for removing explosive gases in the drill shack was also disabled.
- The critical "blowout preventer" switch to shut down the well was also not working.
Typically, the oil industry is one of the safest on the planet due to the potential hazards and the high cost of accidents. Virtually every oil company has very strict safety procedures and a chain of command designed to ensure the safety of the crew. In the case of what many crew members called the "well from hell", safety procedures were deliberately violated by BP management. BP claims that it cut corners to save money but that is not BP's normal policy. BP wastes enormous amounts of money and still had a profit of $14 billion in 2009.
According to articles in the New York Times, workers reported that they “often saw unsafe behaviors on the rig” and that “company plans were not carried out properly.” Some workers raised concerns that “drilling priorities [took] precedence over planned maintenance” and that this had resulted in poor equipment reliability. Another worker said that the rig had not been to dry dock, where it would go to receive thorough maintenance, in the nine years of its existence.
A report conducted a month before the explosion by Transocean, the rigs owner, found that at least 26 components and systems on the rig were in “bad” or “poor” condition and the critical blowout preventer rams and failsafe valves had not been fully inspected since 2000.
The conspiracy to create the world's worst environmental disaster did not include only BP and Transocean, in April 2009 the Obama administration granted BP a special exemption from the legal requirement that it produce a detailed environmental impact study on the possible effects of its Deepwater Horizon drilling operation.
